My Grandfather – the Embroiderer

I inherited a load of embroidery silks early on from an unusual source…my maternal Grandfather was the embroiderer in the family.  He learned as a medical orderly in the First World War – not apparently an unusual thing.  I supposed it gave a respite from the horrors and also helped with the boredom….

 

 

Here he is in his uniform.

He died when I was about 7 but I remember him as a lovely gentle man who grew chyrsanthamums, made chutney and had lots of time for a little girl….

 

 

 

As we have been clearing the family home recently to sell it I took the opportunity to photograph some of his work…I hope he would like the fact that his granddaughter has taken to embroidery and is using his threads in her work…
